FogMap Privacy Policy
Summary
- Your location, footprints, tracks, check-ins and photo information stay on your iPhone. The developer never receives them. A check-in you send to a friend goes only to the person you pick.
- The app has no account system, no developer-operated server, no ads, and no analytics or tracking tools.
- Only when you open a landmark does the app ask Wikipedia for that article's text and thumbnail. It does not send your location.
- Maps are provided by Apple Maps. The app is free with no in-app purchases, so the developer never receives any payment details.
1. Location data
FogMap ("the app") uses your location to light up the places you have been. If you allow "Always" access, the app records in the background in a low-power way; with "While Using the App" it records only while the app is open. You can also turn on Travel Mode, which records more often and more completely.
The app stores two kinds of data: the map cells you have lit (with the date each was first lit) and your daily movement tracks (location points and times). They stay on your device and are not sent to the developer or any third party.
2. Photos
If you grant photo access, the app reads each photo's capture location and date to light up places you have already been, and shows photo thumbnails on the map where they were taken. Thumbnails are produced by Apple Photos on your device. Photo content, locations and thumbnails are never uploaded. You can switch to "Selected Photos" or turn access off in iPhone Settings > Privacy & Security > Photos at any time without affecting other features.
3. Check-ins
Check-ins you create (name, notes, location, time and any photo you choose to attach) are stored only on your device. The developer cannot see them.
4. Other data on your device
The app stores preferences, a record of which unlock celebrations you have seen, and a cache of landmark summaries (the most recently viewed, for offline use). This data may be included in iCloud or computer backups according to your Apple device settings.
5. Notifications
If you allow them, the app shows local notifications on your iPhone when you reach a new place. They are generated entirely on the device; no push server is involved.
6. Features that use the network
- Maps: The map screens use Apple Maps (MapKit). Apple handles map requests under its Privacy Policy.
- Landmark summaries: When you open a landmark, the app asks Wikipedia (Wikimedia Foundation) for the summary and thumbnail of that article. The request contains only the article title and your language preference; Wikimedia servers will see your IP address and handle it under their Privacy Policy. The app does not tell Wikipedia your location or whether you have actually visited the landmark.
Apart from the above, the app integrates no advertising, analytics, crash-reporting or tracking services.
7. Export and sharing
You can export tracks as a GPX file, share your year-in-review picture, or send a single check-in to a friend. These actions are started by you, and the content goes to the app or person you choose (for example AirDrop, LINE or Messages), whose own privacy policy then applies.
A check-in sent to a friend contains the place name, notes, location and date, plus the photo and name you choose to include. It never contains your footprints, tracks or live location. The content lives only in the file or link you send; it does not pass through any developer server and the developer cannot see it.
When you receive a friend's check-in, the app shows it first and asks whether to add it. Once added it is stored only on your phone, and you can hide or delete it at any time without notifying the sender.
8. Children's privacy
The app is not designed for children under 13, and the developer does not knowingly collect personal information from children.
9. Your choices and deleting data
- You can change or turn off the app's location access at any time in iPhone Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
- You can delete a day's track and your check-ins inside the app.
- Deleting the app removes all data it stores on your device, including footprints and tracks. System backups are managed by you in Apple settings.
- Because the data is not held by the developer, the developer cannot look up, export or delete it for you; you can do so in the app.
10. Contact
If you email us, we receive your email address and the contents of your message, used only to reply to you. Please do not attach unnecessary personal data.

11. Changes to this policy
If the app's features or data use change, we will update this policy and the effective date above. Significant changes will be noted in the app's update notes.
